GEOGRAPHY AT ST PAUL’S

Here at St Paul’s, geography equips children with the knowledge, skills and curiosity to understand the world around them and their place within it. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils develop from exploring their immediate environment in the Early Years to analysing global connections, physical processes and human impact by the end of Key Stage 2. In our curriculum, geography is not simply about learning places on a map; it is about understanding how the Earth works, how people live, and how environments are shaped and changed over time.

In Reception, geographical learning begins with children exploring their local surroundings and the natural world, noticing weather, seasons and differences between places. This foundation grows in Key Stage 1 as pupils develop locational knowledge of continents, oceans and the UK, compare environments such as London, Nairobi and the Amazon Rainforest, and begin to use maps and fieldwork skills.

As pupils move into Key Stage 2, their understanding deepens. They study rivers, the water cycle, latitude and longitude, biomes and environmental regions, before progressing to grid references, OS maps and geographical fieldwork. By Year 6, pupils are examining physical processes such as earthquakes and mountains, alongside settlement, trade and comparisons between the UK, Europe and North America. Throughout this journey, children learn to think like geographers: asking questions, interpreting data, making connections across scales, and considering issues of environment and sustainability.

Our geography curriculum fosters respect for diversity, awareness of global interdependence and a sense of responsibility for the planet. By linking local fieldwork with worldwide case studies, pupils see how their lives connect to wider geographical processes, preparing them to be informed, thoughtful and active citizens in an ever-changing world. Geography at St Paul’s really does provide ‘Limitless Learning’!
