Deferred entry
Per the School Admissions Code , although children are entitled to a full-time place from the September following their 4th birthday, parents can delay the date their child starts school to later on in the year (not later than the beginning of the summer term).
This is because children don't need to start full-time education until the first day of the term after they turn 5.
Children that turn 5 between:
- 1 September and 31 December must be in school from the start of the spring term
- 1 January and 31 March must be in school from the start of the summer term
- 1 April and 31 August (summer born) must be in school from the start of the autumn term
Paragraphs 2.17 and 2.18 of the School Admissions Code, page 25 explain this. This code applies to maintained schools and academies (except maintained special schools and special academies).
Deferring until the next academic year
Parents with summer-born children still need to apply for a school place as normal – as if their child were going to start age 4 – even if they want to delay their start date until age 5.
They can apply for their child to be placed in:
- Year 1, with their normal age group – parents must make an in-year application for a place
- Reception, outside their normal age group – parents need to make a request for this. Your admission authority’s admission arrangements explain the process for applying outside of the normal age group. Your authority will decide whether to approve the request
This is explained in the DfE's guidance for parents of summer born children.
Please see our admissions policy for detailed guidance about how to apply for a deferral.
