PSHE AT ST PAUL’S 

At St Paul’s, the PSHME curriculum supports children in developing the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy and responsible lives. Through a carefully sequenced programme from Reception to Year 6, pupils learn about themselves, their relationships with others, and their place within the wider world. PSHE provides the foundation for pupils’ personal development, emotional wellbeing and readiness for life in modern Britain.

In the Early Years, learning begins with children exploring feelings, friendships, families and their own identity. They develop an understanding of being part of a community, keeping themselves healthy and safe, and recognising how they grow and change. This strong start helps children build self-awareness, confidence and the language to talk about their experiences.

In Key Stage 1, pupils deepen their understanding of belonging, similarities and differences, and the importance of kindness and respect. They learn about keeping safe, making healthy choices and managing challenges, while developing early awareness of relationships, life cycles and change. As they move into Key Stage 2, the curriculum becomes increasingly reflective of the wider world. Pupils explore themes such as democracy, rights and responsibilities, diversity, mental and physical health, online safety, aspirations, money, careers and the influence of peers and media.

In upper Key Stage 2, learning prepares pupils for the transition to secondary school and adolescence. They develop knowledge about puberty, growing independence, emotional wellbeing, consent, respectful relationships and personal responsibility. Throughout the programme, pupils are encouraged to reflect, discuss, and develop resilience, empathy and self-esteem.

Our PSHE curriculum enables children to understand that their choices matter — to themselves, to others and to the communities they belong to. By fostering respect, inclusion and emotional literacy, we aim to equip pupils with the tools to navigate life’s challenges and to thrive as thoughtful, informed and caring individuals.
