HISTORY AT ST PAUL’S

Our history curriculum inspires children to explore the past, understand how it shapes the present, and recognise their role in the future. Through rich enquiry, stories and evidence, pupils develop a strong sense of chronology, an understanding of change and continuity, and the ability to think critically about historical events, people and societies.

Historical learning begins in Reception, where children develop an early understanding of the past through their own lives, stories and the concept of “then and now.” In Key Stage 1, pupils extend this understanding by exploring changes within living memory, the lives of significant individuals, and events beyond living memory such as the Great Fire of London, alongside studies of their local area.

In Key Stage 2, pupils build a coherent picture of British, local and world history. They journey from the Stone Age to the Iron Age and Roman Britain, through Anglo-Saxon and Viking England, and into ancient civilisations such as Greece and Egypt or the Shang Dynasty. In upper Key Stage 2, learning becomes increasingly connected to identity and society, including studies of Ancient Greece, the Windrush generation, significant monarchs and the impact of World War II on the Manchester area. These studies enable children to explore migration, conflict, cultural exchange and the development of modern Britain.

Throughout the curriculum, children are encouraged to ask questions, weigh evidence, and consider different perspectives. They learn that history is not just a sequence of events but a way of understanding people, communities and change over time. By linking local heritage with global history, our curriculum helps pupils appreciate diversity, develop empathy, and understand how the past continues to influence the world they live in today.

WORKING AS A HISTORIAN

Our history curriculum focusses on both knowledge and skills.  Disciplinary knowledge (working as a historian) also progresses through our curriculum. To work historically, children will build skills in the below areas.
